Commission on Aging

September 9, 2002

The Prospect Commission on Aging meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Jeannette Lampron, Chairperson.

Members Present: Jeannette Lampron, Miriam Caouette, Joseph Thompson, Ruby DeCosta, Michael Rutkowski, Richard Kuhn, Jean Reilly

Member Absent: Albert Miele, Sr

Others Present: Lucy Smegielski, Bill Brown

A motion was made by Mike Rutkowski, seconded by Miriam Caouette to approve the minutes of the regular meeting June 3, 2002. Vote Unanimous.

Director's Report: None written. Lucy gave an oral report. Tony is filling in for Lorraine who is out on sick leave. She will be back in October. A Bingo Board was purchased with Bingo funds, also two high chairs for Bingo callers. Western Connecticut Commission on Aging will give a grant of $9000 for the Senior Center which is not as much as last year, as their goal is to give less each year to be made up by the town. Prospect has the most people participating in activities at the Center of other towns in the area and quite a few of the people are from other towns. There may have to be a higher charge for out of town people to participate in activities as less and less money is available. No Bus Report.

Old Business: A person has to be found to make the suggestion box. The extra parking spaces will be paved after the fill settles. The Horseshoe and Bocci Courts will not be put in this year. The new mini-bus can't be ordered until next year. A builder is still trying to get State funds for the Senior Housing Project on School House Road. Lucy will invite Pat Geary, of the Town Council, to a meeting of the Commission on Aging to explain the progress of the project.

New Business: So many people come to Bingo that out of town people may have to be limited. It is getting overcrowded. The new one way signs are up at the entrance and exit. The person who donated some of the money to them is very pleased with them. Lucy now has a used copier that copies both sides, collates and staples. It takes much less time to print up the News Letter. Word has been received of the death of Dale Jackson, husband of former Chairperson of the Commission on Aging Fran Jackson, on September 1, 2002. Our condolences to Fran.

AARP: Commission member Al Miele who usually gives the report is in the hospital.

Senior Club: The August meeting had the most people ever in attendance. The membership now stands at 400. It is hoped that all 400 don't show up for the meetings at the same time. The meetings are twice a month.

Public Participation: None

A motion was made by Mike Rutkowski, seconded by Joe Thompson to adjourn the meeting at 10:34 a.m. Vote Unanimous.

Respectfully Submitted,
Jeannette Lampron, Chairperson
Martha Brown, Clerk
