Thanks to the support of town residents and town businesses, the new playground is up and being used by children in Town. We appreciate all the support this cause has received and we ask you to continue supporting us, until the project is completed finished. Canfield Park is located next to Algonquin School, on Route 69 heading towards New Haven. All of the pavers that were purchased by residents and businesses were placed on a beautifully constructed patio that is next to the playground. The patio was completed by Town Residents Joe Testa, and Billy Dakaj, and Town Business Owner Baki Belica from Baki's Pizzeria. There are a few more additions to be done to complete the project at the playground, but we encourage everyone to go and see what has been done, and to take your children to play on the new facilities. Take a look at what the new playground looks like!Canfield Park
Why a new Playground?
Algonquin School does not have a gymnasium (they do not use the cafeteria); the PE classes are held in a small room in the basement of the school. The recess used to be held in the parking lot of the school, with 6 swings and an outdated, pressure treated wood, playscape that is surrounded by rocks. In warm weather, it is infested with bees and in the winter it is barricaded by snow piles left from plowing. Bottom line is that there isn't any modern equipment for physical activity.
Recess was recently moved to Canfield Park which is in front of Algonquin School. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades use this area with 50 or more children in one place. The current playgound was not designed for this amount of children with only one metal slide, (which becomes hot from the sun), and a minimal number of swings. Children are waiting in lines to use equipment when they only have about 10 to 15 minutes of recess time...their only "down" time.
Canfild Park is town property and the Parks and Recreation Department is willing to maintain this playground while allowing the school to use this park for our children to play in a safe - fun area. With the help of many volunteers and the Parks and Recreation Department, we are raising money for new playground equipment. The new playground equipment will accommodate many more children, will be A.D.A. approved, will be made of recycled materials that works well for children ages 5 to 12...perfect for Algonquin Elementary School. In the event a new school is constructed in the next 5 years - this playground will always be available to the community.
To purchase this equipment, our goal is to raise $30,000. To accomplish this goal, the playground committee has organized several funraisers:
We need the help of the entire Region 16 Community! If each family donates only $50.00 we can have this new playground! Your small investment is in the best interest of the kid's at Algonquin School and the Town of Prospect. We want the children to enjoy the new playground as soon as possible, so please donate today. Any size donation is appreciated and is tax deductible! Remember to watch our thermometer reading in front of the Town Hall to track our progress!
A section of Canfield Park Playground will be layed with bricks inscribed with the names of contributors to the project. Individuals, groups or organizations can purchase a brick or sponsor a piece of equipment to support the playground to recognize a loved one, special occasion, beloved pet, business or organization.
